April brings fresh starts, and it’s the perfect month to refresh areas that affect family life the most. This month’s focus is the garage — a space many of us avoid but one that makes a big difference when it’s organized. It may feel like a big job, but breaking it into manageable steps across the month makes it realistic and rewarding. Spring’s comfortable temperatures make outdoor sorting and airing things out more pleasant, so take advantage of the season.

What to declutter during Spring?

Spring is an excellent time to sort through items commonly stored in the garage: gardening supplies, sports and recreation equipment, seasonal gear, and miscellaneous items that accumulate over time. The weather often cooperates, offering sunny, mild days that are perfect for working semi-outdoors. Use this season to clear out items you no longer need or use so your garage can function better for your family.

Why declutter the garage?

The garage is often the first area you and your family see when coming home, so making it welcoming matters. Take a moment to answer a few honest questions about your garage:

  1. Do you close the garage door quickly so neighbors can’t see the clutter?
  2. Can you actually park a car in the garage?
  3. Can you open car doors without bumping items?
  4. Have college boxes or long-forgotten belongings taken over the space?
  5. Are you hesitant to look behind piles because you don’t know what might be there?

Most importantly: when you open the garage door after a long day, does the space bring you any joy? The garage sets a daily first impression of your home — making it neat and functional can lift your spirits and simplify routines. That’s why this month’s focus is the garage.

  • Broken lawn and garden equipment
  • Outgrown sports items
  • Worn sports equipment
  • Empty boxes
  • Tattered or dated home decor
  • Excess old rags
  • Old paint and chemicals (dispose of properly)
  • Trash (you may be surprised how much)

Bonus tip: deal with the “someday” pile. Those odds and ends that have lingered for months or years often don’t get used. Ask yourself if you’ll truly use an item again or if it’s just guilt keeping it around. Let go of things that no longer serve you.
