What is hummus?

Hummus is a classic Middle Eastern dip made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. It’s versatile — great as a spread, a dip, or a sandwich topper.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1/2 cup tahini
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp fine sea salt
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 2 (15-oz.) cans chickpeas, rinsed, drained and shelled
  • 1/3 cup cold water (more as needed)
  • 1 Tbsp everything bagel seasoning, plus extra for sprinkling
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

I like to make a batch at the start of the week and enjoy it as a snack over several days. Use it as a spread for sandwiches or as a dip for fresh vegetables, naan or pita, crackers, breadsticks, or pretzels.

I use canned chickpeas and usually peel the skins for an extra-smooth texture. It takes a little time, but the silkier result is worth the effort.

Step-By-Step Instructions

The first step is to add the tahini, olive oil, salt, garlic, and lemon juice to a food processor and pulse until smooth.

The second step is to add the chickpeas and cold water, then process until smooth, about 3 minutes, scraping down the bowl halfway through. Add more water, a tablespoon at a time, if the mixture is too thick.

The third and final step is to add the everything bagel seasoning and pulse once or twice to combine. Spoon the hummus into a serving bowl, drizzle with a little olive oil, and sprinkle extra everything seasoning on top. Serve with fresh vegetables, crackers, pretzels, or chips.

A Few Cook’s Notes

Peeling the skins from canned chickpeas makes a noticeably smoother hummus — I recommend it when you want an ultra-creamy texture.

Everything bagel seasoning is available pre-made in many grocery stores, or you can make your own blend of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried onion and garlic, and salt.
