We drink a lot of green smoothies around here. I reach for them when I want an easy way to get more greens—I’d rather sip a fruity drink than sit down to a plate of spinach. This strawberry banana green smoothie is a current favorite. We adapt it to whatever’s on the counter or in the freezer; lately that has meant plenty of bananas and frozen strawberries. It’s oddly addictive: the first sip is pleasant, and a few seconds later you find yourself taking another. That’s how I like to get my daily greens. The strawberries probably make it taste like spring, which doesn’t hurt.

Ingredients
- 1 large over-ripe banana
- 2 handfuls of spinach about a cup and a half packed
- 1 cup milk dairy or non-dairy, or water
- 1/2 cup frozen strawberries or a bit more to taste
- 1 tablespoon ground flax seed
Instructions
-
Place the banana, spinach and milk (or water) in a blender and blend until smooth. If you haven’t tried a green smoothie before, start with only one cup of spinach to see how you like it. Over time you can add more; many of us barely notice the taste once it’s well blended. I often use water or almond milk for myself and full-fat dairy milk for the kids—both work well. Blend until there are no spinach chunks. Add the frozen strawberries and the flaxseed, then blend again until completely smooth. If the strawberries are tart and you’d prefer a sweeter drink, add a small Medjool date and blend until smooth.
