Red, white and blue fruit and jello cups are an easy, crowd-pleasing 4th of July dessert. With just six simple ingredients you can assemble festive jello cups for the whole family — or swap the cold water for vodka to make boozy jello shots for adults. These cups are straightforward to prepare, can be made a day ahead, and are quick to finish on-site if you’re bringing them to a party.

To assemble at a gathering, bring chilled cool whip in a piping bag with a tip and a container of fresh blueberries and chopped strawberries. The jello sets quickly and the final assembly takes only minutes.

How to Assemble an American Flag Jello

Prepare each jello packet following the package directions. For each packet dissolve 1 cup boiling water into the jello powder, stir until fully dissolved, then add 1 cup cold water (or 1 cup vodka for adult versions) and mix.

Divide the prepared jello evenly among your cups, filling each about halfway. If using strawberry jello, add chopped strawberries to the cups; if using berry blue jello, add blueberries. Refrigerate until the jello sets.

Before serving, pipe a layer of cool whip on top of each cup and garnish with fresh strawberries and blueberries to create a red, white and blue presentation.

Equipment

  • Glass mixing bowl

Ingredients

  • Strawberry Jello
  • Berry Blue Jello
  • Water (or vodka for boozy version)
  • Cool whip
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries, chopped

Instructions

  1. For each packet of jello, pour the powder into a mixing bowl and add 1 cup of boiling water. Stir 1–2 minutes until the powder is completely dissolved.
  2. Add 1 cup of cold water (or 1 cup vodka for a boozy version) and stir to combine.
  3. Divide the jello mixture evenly among cups, filling them about halfway. Add chopped strawberries to the strawberry jello cups and blueberries to the blue jello cups.
  4. Refrigerate the cups until the jello is fully set, about one hour.
  5. Just before serving, pipe cool whip on top of each cup and finish with a few pieces of fresh strawberries or blueberries.

Notes

Layer thickness affects how many cups one box of jello will yield; one box typically makes about 4–5 cups depending on glass size. Equipment used in the original recipe included small dessert bowls. For boozy shots simply replace the cold water with vodka.
