I’ve been running for more than eight years, and from my first trail race I was hooked. I’m lucky to live near an excellent trail network in the state park and within easy driving distance of the Red Mountain area around Birmingham. Trail running is different from road running in so many ways — rugged, unpredictable, and endlessly rewarding. Below I’ve put together a list of things that make trail running unique and why I love technical trails so much.
20. Snakes. I don’t mind them; they add a bit of excitement and create stories worth telling.
19. Squirrels. They can be mischievous and sometimes toss things at you — adventures you won’t get on pavement.
18. Leaves and twigs. Small details that make the trail interesting, and great if you’re into botany.
17. Tree roots. Rooty sections keep you alert and build strong calves — part of the challenge and fun.
16. Gravel. A tumble on coarse gravel leaves a story and often a saddlebag of “battle scars.”
15. Nature’s rest spots. Sometimes you need privacy out on the trail; nature provides.
14. Canopy. A leafy canopy keeps you drier in showers and shaded on hot days, though it can trap humidity — part of the jungle feel I enjoy.
13. Privacy. Trails often offer solitude and space to be alone with your thoughts.
12. Hills. I love climbing — the ups and downs are what make trails rewarding.
11. Single track. Narrow, technical singletrack is where trail running becomes truly engaging.
10. Trail shoes. The right shoes make you feel confident and ready for anything the trail throws at you.
9. A good hat. A trail hat helps keep bugs and sun out of your eyes and adds comfort on long runs.
8. Trail skirt. Practical and comfortable — I love mine for technical runs.
7. Bugs. Annoying at times, but part of the ecosystem and one more element that makes trails alive.
6. Elevation tracking. Watching the elevation climb on my Garmin gives me a satisfying sense of progress.
5. A capable vehicle. I chose a 4Runner so I can reach remote trailheads comfortably, load gear, and enjoy the drive with good music and a sunroof.
4. Trail mix. A simple, delicious staple on every run.
3. Silence. When the woods are still, that quiet feels sacred and restorative.
2. Nature’s sounds. Birdsong, leaves, and the rustle of wildlife create a soundtrack that makes every run memorable.
1. Where my heart is. Trail running feeds my spirit. The challenge, beauty, and solitude of the trails are why I keep coming back.
